Beast of the East: PJP's Ryan Vulakh places first, brother Matt earns fifth

NEWARK, Del. – Pope John Paul II senior Ryan Vulakh captured the 152-pound championship at the prestigious Beast of the East wrestling tournament over the weekend at the University of Delaware.

In the championship final, Ryan posted a 3-0 shutout of Cole Handlovic (Bethlehem Catholic) to reach the top of the medal stand after a 6-0 tournament run that featured two majors and one tech fall.

Also for PJP, which finished 27th as a team in the 116-school field, sophomore Matt Valukh – Ryan’s younger brother – placed fifth at 106, handling Evan Holloway (New Kent, VA) 4-0 in the fifth-place match. Matt was 5-2 for the event with a pair of falls.

PJP senior Jack Files rallied back from an opening-round loss to reach Round 6 of the consolations in the 195-pound bracket, winning four consecutive matches with a pair of pins before losing to McDonough’s Jack Wimmer 3-2 to fall just short of a medal.
