A blizzard of holiday basketball tournaments on tap for PAC-10 boys, girls teams

While the area digs out from the first snowfall of the year and the kids dig out from beneath a massive pile of giftwrap, the Pioneer Athletic Conference boys and girls basketball teams will dig in this week in a blizzard of holiday tournaments.

If you’re looking to stay around the area, the Spring-Ford girls tournament and the boys/girls event at Boyertown should fill the bill.

The unbeaten Rams will stage an 8-team, round-robin event beginning with four games Tuesday, highlighted by the Spring-Ford and Daniel Boone clash in the 7:30 p.m. nightcap. The three-day event will continue Wednesday with Spring-Ford tipping off against Hempfield at 6 p.m., and conclude Thursday when the Rams and Conestoga square off in the 7:30 p.m. nightcap. Rounding out the field in Royersford will be Central Bucks South, Downingtown West, Parkland and Great Valley. Each day’s four-game card begins at 3 p.m.

At Boyertown, the Bear Holiday Classic Tuesday and Wednesday will feature 4 games (2 boys, 2 girls). In the girls bracket on opening day, Boyertown will host Pennridge at 6 p.m. The winner of that contest will draw the Downingtown East-Nazareth survivor Wednesday at 6 p.m. for the championship. The boys bracket Tuesday features Pennridge-Gov. Mifflin at 4:30 followed by the Bears hosting Southern Lehigh at 7:30. Winners will then compete Wednesday at 7:30 for the boys title.

The remainder of the boys tournaments are as follows:   Pope John Paul II vs. Penn Charter, 1 p.m. at the Bishop McDevitt Tournament (originally scheduled to begin Monday but pushed back one day because of the weather); Owen J. Roberts vs. Avon Grove, 6, Great Valley Classic; Methacton vs. Engineering and Science, 6 p.m., Chris Smith Tournament at North Penn; Spring-Ford vs. Vaux, 6, Coatesville Tournament; Phoenixville vs. Bishop Shanahan, 6, Marple-Newtown Tournament; Pottsgrove vs. Christopher Dock, 6, and Upper Perkiomen vs. Radnor in the Walt Katuzny Tournament at Radnor. Those tournaments all begin Tuesday with consolation and championship rounds following Wednesday.

The girls tournament schedule is as follows: Pope John Paul II vs. Plymouth Whitemarsh, 7:30 p.m. at the George W. Smear Tournament (formerly the Bridgeport Catholic War Vets Tournament) at the Fellowship House in Conshohocken; Holy Spirit vs. Methacton, 7:15, at the Boardwalk Classic in Wildwood, N.J.; Perkiomen Valley vs. tournament host Wilson West-Lawn, 7:45; Phoenixville vs. Haverford High, 6, at Unionville Tournament; Pottsgrove vs. tournament host Southern Lehigh, 7; and Upper Perkiomen vs. tournament host Quakertown, 8. With the exception of the weather-delayed Boardwalk Classic, those events begin Tuesday with consolation and championship rounds slated for Wednesday.
