Field hockey: Young helps Upper Perkiomen survive in OT; Phoenixville, Pope John Paul II ousted

(3) Upper Perkiomen 2, (14) WC Henderson 1, OT – AiYi Young found the back of the cage off a Colleen Crenti assist in overtime to help the third-seeded PAC champion Indians capture their District 1-2A playoff opener Tuesday in the rain in Red Hill.
Young also posted an assist on Bella Carpenter’s strike with 8:01 remaining in the second half that snapped a scoreless deadlock before the visiting Warriors got the equalizer with 6:05 left.
Upper Perk hosts No. 6 Wissahickon Thursday in the district quarterfinals, with the winner locking up a state playoff bid. The Trojans advanced with a 2-1 triumph over No. 11 Harriton Tuesday.

(9) Villa Maria Academy 2, (8) Phoenixville 0 – The Phantoms ended their season at 13-7 with the upset loss in the opening round of the District 1-2A tournament.
 
(2) Bishop Shanahan 5, (15) Pope John Paul II 0 – Chiky Escudero finished with 21 saves for the Golden Panthers in their season-ending loss to the Eagles in the opening round of the District 1-2A playoffs. Shanahan, which moves on to face Mount St. Joseph Academy Thursday in the second round of districts, got two goals and one assist each from Angelina Luongo and Gabby O’Brien in the win.
PJP finishes the season 7-10-1 overall.
