Girls hoops: Great Valley ends Pope John Paul II's season in opening round of districts

(3) Great Valley 56, (14) Pope John Paul II 32 – Kayla Viney hit for 10 points and Tess Crossan chipped in with 8 but it wasn’t enough as the Golden Panthers suffered the season-ending loss in the opening round of the District 1-5A playoffs Tuesday night.

The Patriots (21-4), who avenged a 45-28 loss to PJP in the opening round of the district tournament last season, set the tone with a 16-4 run out of the starting blocks, keyed by senior Tessa Liberatoscioli with 11 of her 15 points during that stretch.

Liberatoscioli finished one rebound short of a double-double while Emily Dupont canned 17 points for Great Valley, which hosts Ches-Mont foe (6) West Chester East in the quarterfinals Friday.

The Golden Panthers , who lose only seniors Viney and Mary Kate Shannon, finish 12-11 in a season marred by inexperience and injury – including a season-ending knee injury to 5-foot-10 junior Kallen Bustynowciz, who averaged 13 ppg last season as a sophomore.
