(4) Villa Maria Academy 43, (8) Pottsgrove 35 – The Falcons were doomed by a sluggish start and limited production at the offensive end in sustaining the season-ending loss in the playback phase of the District 1-5A tournament Tuesday night.
In the high-stakes matchup – with the winner earning a state playoff berth and the loser going home - Pottsgrove allowed eight unanswered points out of the gate and trailed 10-2 after the opening quarter. The uphill climb from that point proved to be too much for the Grove to navigate.
Sydney Mowery collected 11 points and 8 rebounds for the Falcons while the only senior starter for the locals – Summer Walker – finished her solid career with 8 points. Also, Riley Simon chipped in with four points and 6 steals, Sierra Potts knocked down a pair of triples for 6 points and Rachel Ludwig also canned 6 points.
The Grove did not go down without a fight, getting within one point in the third quarter and opening the fourth trailing by just 28-24. But the Hurricanes, who got a game-high 23 points from Maddy Ryan, regained their rhythm in the fourth quarter and closed things out with a 15-11 advantage.
The setback didn’t diminish what the Falcons accomplished this season – including a perfect 10-0 mark to win the PAC Frontier title, a berth in the league’s Final 6 playoffs and the first district playoff victory in more than 10 years. The Grove finished 18-8.
The Hurricanes move on to play (6) West Chester East (52-43 winner over (2) Penn Wood) Friday for district seeding in the state playoffs.
