Historic run ends for Owen J. Roberts in second round of states

(1-2) Pennsbury 50, (1-9) Owen J. Roberts 27 – The greatest season in program history ran out of road for the Wildcats in the second round of the District 1-6A tournament Tuesday night at Bensalem.

OJR allowed seven unanswered points off the opening tip and never recovered, ending a Cinderella Run that produced the first state playoff victory in school history - made possible by a scintillating three-game run of narrow triumphs in the consolation bracket of the District 1 tournament.

Tuesday the Cats never got much going at the offensive end while falling behind 13-5 after one quarter and 24-9 at the break, failing to put a player in double figures for the night and managing just 17 points combined in the opening three periods.

Sophomore point guard Avery White finished with 8 points, Brooke Greenawald added 7 and Maddi Koury and Olivia LeClaire chipped in with 4 each for OJR, which finishes with a school record 21 wins against 10 losses in a landmark season that produced the school's first district and state playoff victories ever in girls basketball.

The Wildcats will lose seniors LeClaire, the program’s all-time leading scorer, Greenawald, Maddi Koury, sharpshooter Hannah Clay, reserve guard Emily Schall and reserve forward Rory Cahill from their history-making squad.

Pennsbury (24-5), the district runner-ups, got double figures from Nicole Pompili (12 points, all in fourth quarter) and Bella Arcuri (10) while Ava Sciolla (9) and Mary Miller (8) also contributed at the offensive end.

Up next for the Falcons in the state quarterfinals Friday night (time and site TBA) is District 12 champion Cardinal O’Hara, which bounced the other PAC entry (1-4) Spring-Ford 54-43 in the opener at Bensalem.
