Pope John Paul II comes up empty in district quarterfinals

(3) West Chester Henderson 29, (11) Pope John Paul II 27 – Kallen Bustynowicz collected 11 points and nine rebounds, Elise Sylvester scored 8 points and Tess Crossan was a defensive menace with six steals but it wasn’t enough as the Golden Panthers dropped the District 1-5A quarterfinal decision Friday night.
PJP, which now faces Harriton Tuesday night in playbacks with the winner earning a state playoff berth, had two possessions coming down the stretch to lock things up.
But the defending district champion Warriors (19-6) turned the Golden Panthers (15-10) away with a pair of stops, including a forced turnover by Molly Nanni as time expired.
Erin Thompson hit for 11 points and Grace Ferguson added 7 points and 7 rebounds for the Warriors, who move on to face (2) Villa Maria Tuesday night (6 pm) at Harriton in the district semis.
