Pope John Paul II shocks Great Valley in district opener; Pottsgrove's solid season ends

(11) Pope John Paul II 45, (6) Great Valley 28 – The Golden Panthers bolted out to a 15-3 lead by the end of the first quarter and never looked back in their District 1-5A opening round win Tuesday night.
Elise Sylvester scored 13 points and handed out 8 assists, Kallen Bustynowicz recorded a double-double with 10 points and 11 rebounds and Lauren Ciuba chipped in with 9 points to send PJP to a quarterfinal date at (3) West Chester Henderson Friday night (7 pm).
The Golden Panthers (15-9) were outstanding from beyond the arc with seven three-balls and also got 7 boards and 5 points from Tess Crossan.

(12) Mount St. Joseph Academy 61, (5) Pottsgrove 46 – The Falcons saw their outstanding season end on a down note with the opening round loss in the District 1-5A playoffs.
Pottsgrove, which finishes at 17-7 after its third straight loss, led 28-26 at the break but fell apart down the stretch, outscored 17-7 in the third quarter and 18-11 in the fourth.
Sydney Mowery had 8 of her team-high 12 points in the first quarter while Sierra Potts (9 points, 3 treys) and Summer Walker (8 points) also chipped in offensively for the Grove, which shared the PAC Frontier Division title with PJP at 9-1 and played in the league’s Final Six playoffs this season - both preseason goals for the team and veteran coach Mike Brendlinger.
