Football signings: Pope John Paul II's Gray, Mitala headed to next level

Pope John Paul II senior athletes continue to reap the rewards of the greatest season in program history as record-setting quarterback Kamal Gray signed a national letter of intent to continue his academic/athletic career at Division I Temple University and linebacker signed with Division I FCS Lafayette College..
Gray and Mitala join senior teammate Dylan Walker in heading to the next level. Walker, a tight end, previously signed with Division I Colorado State. Gray, Mitala and Walker were all first team selections on the PA. Football Writers Class 3A All-State first team.
PJP earned the first PAC Frontier championship in program history this past fall, and got another first later – a District 1/12 Class 4A crown – with a thrilling 29-28 conquest of heavily-favored Neumann-Goretti.
PJP’s landmark season ended in with a 47-21 loss to District 11 champion Tamaqua in the PIAA Class 3A quarterfinals despite the efforts of Gray (202 passing yards, 3 TDs) and Mitala (9 tackles). Gray finished the season with 2,744 passing yards that produced 38 TDs against just 8 picks while compiling a league-best 167.9 quarterback rating.
